# Play each chord three times

Play the same chord several times in a row before moving on, to practice rhythm, voicing and a clean release.

## Why play a chord more than once

If the drill moves on as soon as you get a chord right, what you mostly practice is searching for it. The second and third time you play the same chord, you no longer have to search: the same notes with the same fingers, in tempo, with a clean release in between.

Turn on **Repeat each chord** and every question is asked two to ten times in a row before the next one is drawn.

## The dots above the chord

The practice screen counts the repetitions for you, with one dot for each that fills in as you play. The hints, the hearts and the metronome work as usual, and the chord changes only once every dot is filled.

> With the metronome on, each repetition takes one bar: play the chord on beat one, release it, wait, and play it again. This way you practice rhythm along with the chord.

## Do mistakes count?

You decide. By default only correct attempts count toward the repetitions, so after a fumble you play that chord again.

Turn on **count a wrong attempt as a rep** if you would rather keep the session moving. A slip still costs a heart, but you do not get stuck on one chord.

## Try a few repetitions

- Try it: [Triads, three times each](https://pianokitty.com/app?subject=chords&ct=0,1&bn=0,2,5,7,9&inv=0&dbl=true&dbln=3): The default. Find it once, then play it twice more.
- Try it: [Sevenths, five times each](https://pianokitty.com/app?subject=chords&ct=6,7,8&bn=0,2,5,7,9&inv=0&dbl=true&dbln=5): Enough repetitions to play the shape without thinking.
- Try it: [Three times, to a click](https://pianokitty.com/app?subject=chords&ct=0,1&bn=0,2,5,7,9&inv=0&dbl=true&dbln=3&tempo=70): Metronome at 70, one chord per bar.
- Try it: [Inversions, four times each](https://pianokitty.com/app?subject=chords&ct=0,1&bn=0,2,5,7,9&inv=1,2&reqinv=true&dbl=true&dbln=4): First and second inversions, with the inversion required.
